While a number of people have commented, "What a smart name for a
desk," the desk's name actually comes from the Harvard Shakers. This
group was literally beaten out of Massachusetts upon their first
attempt at settlement. Their second attempt succeeded proving their
dedication and, hopefully, their wisdom. Handbuilt
