Due to the
scarcity of books in Colonial America, the combination of a slant
top desk with a bookcase didn’t become popular until the mid-18th
century. After its introduction, the secretary desk became one of
the premier expressions of cabinetmaking. As letter writing grew
in importance, the secretary desk underwent a variety of stylistic
transformations. Designs inspired by Thomas Chippendale, such as
our Nine Pane Secretary Desk, were the benchmark of good taste in
America well into the 19th century. Handbuilt in Oak or Cherry.
