Cupboards first
appeared in America in the mid-17th century. Originally, they were
merely a "cup board," a single shelf built to hold
cups and other dishes. As the design evolved, it incorporated
an upper
section featuring multiple shelves housed behind glass or solid
doors. During the 18th century, these large architectural
cupboards
became known as some of the finest examples of the cabinetmaker's
art.
